Butterfly Ward
Wall Artwork

The neonatal intensive care unit at the Royal North Shore Hospital cares for newborn babies in very delicate health. Parents, carers and children who move through this unit are going through a difficult time. As part of a recent redevelopment, the hospital sought to add warmth to what can be perceived as a sterile environment through the use of art.

The artworks I created for the ward use the motif of a butterfly’s evolution to create three distinct and progressive stages from admittance towards recovery, with the eventual goal of the baby’s full health and journey home.

Many thanks to the nurses who allowed me to come in and document my work.
