Gurangatch and MirrIgan

Gurangatch and Mirrigan is a Gundungarra Dreaming story, which tells of how Gurangatch the rainbow eel forms the rivers and waterways of Gundungarra Country as he evades Mirrigan’s relentless pursuit of his flesh.

This Dreaming includes 21 sacred waterholes, all but 4 of which were flooded when the Warragamba Dam (which provides the majority of Sydney’s drinking water) was built.

For this animated retelling, I was responsible for visually interpreting the script into storyboards and background layouts. This is a collection of my favourite scenes and sequences.

The scope of the project called for the story to be told through a series of key compositions with minimal character animation, so I focused on creating engagement through dramatic perspectives and tone, as well as highlighting the characters’ emotional journeys.

Gurangatch and Mirrigan is showing at the Australian Museum within the new learning and play space Burra.
